Demantoid

Rare and highly sought, demantoid is the green variety of andradite, which is a mineral species within the garnet group. The name demantoid is in reference to its diamond-like “luster”. In fact, demantoid is more dispersive than diamond! Originally found in Russia, demantoids mined there commonly had asbestos inclusions in a distinctive form called horsetail inclusions. Today these brilliant green gems are primarily mined in Namibia. Larger demantoids that are eye clean and a clear green are extremely rare. Garnets are the birthstone for January and are designated for the 2nd anniversary.
