Lab Created Gemstones
A synthetic gem is one that has been created in a laboratory. It has essentially the same chemical, optical and physical properties as its natural counterpart. In the late 1800’s, synthetic ruby of faceting quality was the first gem to be successfully created in a laboratory. Since then, sapphire, emerald, spinel and alexandrite have been commercially produced in a variety of methods such as flame fusion, crystal pulling, flux growth and hydrothermal.
