Mexican Fire Opal
Fire is a descriptive term applied to transparent to translucent opal with a background color that is yellow to orange to red. It’s body color is thought to be caused by small amounts of iron. Not all fire opals exhibit play-of-color. In fact, most fire opals do not; these stones are usually faceted to enhance their fiery glow. Opals with play of color are almost always cut into cabochons to highlight their flashing patterns. Opal is designated as the birthstone for October and the 14th wedding anniversary. Fire opals are mined primarily in Mexico, hence the moniker Mexican fire opal, and is considered the Mexican national gemstone. Fire opals are also found in Ethiopia.
