Padparadscha Sapphire
The highly prized padparadscha sapphire is one of the rarest gems on the market. What makes this sapphire so special is its very unique color, best described as a delicate light to medium pink-orange or orange-pink; a pleasing pastel combination most resembling the color known as “salmon”. Originally mined in Sri Lanka, this distinctively beautiful sapphire is named for the lotus blossom because it’s color is reminiscent of the flower’s coloring. In fact, “padparadscha” is Sinhalese (the language of the largest ethnic group in Sri Lanka) for lotus blossom. Today these exquisite beauties are found mainly in Sri Lanka, it’s historical source, but the unusual color can also be found in select stones from Madagascar and Tanzania.
