Ruby is the red variety of the gem species corundum. All other colors are classified as sapphire. The name ruby is derived from the Latin word “ruber” meaning red – the color of passion. Historically referred to as the King of Gems, royal rubies are designated as the birthstone for July and the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries.
