Tourmalines that are a particularly striking vivid purplish red to red are known as Rubellite. The term rubellite is derived from the Latin word “rubellus” meaning red. Color is the most important determinant of value with the most saturated redder colors being most desirable. Rubellites are usually included therefore eye clean gems are especially valued. This ruby-like tourmaline is mined in Afghanistan, Brazil, East Africa, Madagascar and the US. Tourmalines are designated as the October birthstone and for the 8th wedding anniversary.
